In September 2015, 193 member countries of the United Nations, including France, adopted the 2030 Agenda. This global action plan aims to encourage governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society to work together on issues such as the end of poverty, prosperity for all and the protection of the planet. By joining this approach, France is accelerating its historic commitment to ecological transformation to meet the sustainable development objectives in 2030.
Aware of the impact of its activity on the environment, the health sector must implement concrete and effective actions. This is what Poitiers University Hospital is committed to in 2022.
Initiatives had been launched since 2005 to reduce the environmental impact of the establishment but without common direction. In 2022, Poitiers University Hospital called on an external firm to define strategic issues around five major axes. A steering committee on sustainable development, made up of professionals from all hospital sectors, has been set up. In the field, professionals have taken up sustainable development in a growing dynamic. In each department, ideas and initiatives abounded to reduce the impact on the establishment’s environment. As a result, several actions were implemented by the establishment’s professionals, in all sectors: care services, operating theaters, catering, laundry, hotel, biomedical and IT equipment, works, energy, waste management and sorting, reuse of furniture and materials, mobility, training, and communication.
Among these, the transition from plastic nourettes (small baby bottles) to glass in the maternity ward, the reduction in the use of water and chemicals in biocleaning, the recycling and recovery of metals in operating theatres, improvement of sorting and recovery of all waste, the use of renewable energies, or humanitarian donations.
In 2023, thanks to the support of the external firm AXEGE, the identified actions were grouped together in the form of a agenda 2030 to show the Poitiers University Hospital action plan and its commitment to sustainable development for our professionals, our users and our partners. To be more effective, a network of sustainable development ambassadors was created. The actions carried out will be evaluated regularly until 2030.
