Vast trafficking in pregabalin, an epilepsy drug diverted for recreational purposes, was dismantled in Clermont-Ferrand. Four people were indicted after the seizure of 245,000 capsules, with an estimated value of 750,000 euros.
The investigation began in May, when several customers of a pharmaceutical distribution company reported discrepancies in their pregabalin orders. An internal investigation revealed that more than 600,000 tablets had been stolen between May and August, costing 300,000 euros.
Investigators quickly discovered that two company employees were responsible for the thefts. They diverted them for the benefit of a network of traffickers active in the Clermont region. The investigation led to the arrest of four individuals this week, after the theft of two pallets of pregabalin (2,304 boxes).
During the search, the police seized an impressive quantity of illegal goods: 245,000 capsules, more than 200,000 euros in cash, firearms, including two assault rifles, eight hand grenades, as well as narcotics.
Pregabalin, used to treat epilepsy and neuropathic pain, is increasingly misused for its psychoactive effects. Excessive use can lead to serious complications, including impaired consciousness and even coma. The National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) reacted by restricting, in May 2021, the conditions for prescribing this medication.
