The town of Moutier will not have a municipal police force once it becomes part of the Jura. The Provost authorities have decided to give it up according to information transmitted through the canton of Jura on Thursday. The Jura Government has, in fact, submitted to Parliament a draft partial revision of the law on the cantonal police. Legislative adaptations are planned to allow the creation of a public security service in Moutier.
The uncertainties linked to the future of the municipal police in the Jura pushed the Provost authorities to make this decision. Municipal councilor Clément Piquerez also mentions significant financial issues. In the end, a hybrid solution was found. The legislative changes submitted to Parliament will allow Jura municipalities which do not have municipal police to hire public security assistants to collect administrative fines.
Expanded prerogatives
The current administrative police of Moutier will therefore be replaced by a public security service from January 1, 2026. The new structure will, however, have more important prerogatives than today and the current agents will be trained accordingly. Clément Piquerez welcomes an improvement. The Provost municipal councilor believes that the feeling of proximity will be reinforced with this solution.
The project submitted to the Jura Parliament also provides for various updates in terms of data protection, in particular the establishment of a referent on this issue within the cantonal police. /comm-alr
