INSEE revealed the population figures for the municipalities this Thursday, December 19, 2024.
As of January 1, 2022, Brittany had nearly 3,423,000 inhabitants. “Between 2016 and 2022, the Breton population increases on average by 0.6% each year», Underlines the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies.
As for the population of Finistère, it increased by 3,300 inhabitants on average per year. 927,912 people lived in our department in 2022 compared to 908,249 in 2016 and 899,870 in 2011.
What about in the Brest metropolitan area?
Brest passes the 140,000 inhabitants mark
With 140,993 inhabitants, Brest sees its population growingon an annual average of 0.2% over the period 2016-2022, while it lost inhabitants between 2011 and 2016 (-0.2%).
She is always there second most populous city in Brittany behind Rennes (227,830), and ahead of Quimper (64,530), Lorient (58,202), Vannes (54,955), Saint-Malo (47,255), Saint-Brieuc (44,607), Lanester (23,188) and Concarneau (20,632).
In Finistère, it therefore takes the lead ahead of Quimper, Concarneau, Landerneau (16,327) and Guipavas (15,401).
In the metropolis, Guipavas is growing strongly
In the metropolis, Brest is the city which is seeing its number of inhabitants increase most sharply, with +1,651 inhabitants between 2016 (139,342) and 2022 (140,993).
All the other municipalities have gained inhabitants in six years:
- Guipavas: + 935 inhabitants, 15,401 in 2022 compared to 14,466 in 2016
- Plouzané: + 674 inhabitants, 13,437 in 2022 compared to 12,763 in 2016
- Le Relecq-Kerhuon: + 403 inhabitants, 11,837 in 2022 compared to 11,434 in 2016
- Gouesnou: + 288 inhabitants, 6,528 in 2022 compared to 6,240 in 2016
- Guilers: + 211 inhabitants, 8,221 in 2022 compared to 8,010 in 2016
- Bohars: + 197 inhabitants, 3,671 in 2022 compared to 3,474 in 2016
- Plougastel-Daoulas: + 82 inhabitants, 13,431 in 2022 compared to 13,349 in 2016.
Who earns the most inhabitants in Finistère?
Among municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants, Pluven (3,298 inhabitants) is the one which had the highest growth rate. Between 2016 and 2022, its population increased on average each year by 2.5%.
During this period, Pencran (2,229) saw its population grow by 2.3%, Mellac (3,371) by 1.7%, Saint-Yvi (3,418) by 1.6%, as did Bénodet (3,878).
On the contrary, cities are losing their attractiveness. Pont-de-Buis-les-Quimerchis that of 2,000 inhabitants or more which is in sharper decline (3,571, -1.3% each year between 2016 and 2022). Followed by Kerlouan (2,028, -1.1%), Camaret-sur-Mer (2,448, – 0.9%), Cléder (3,582, -0.9%) and Dirinon (2,195, -0.7%) .
