Work to modernize metro line 6 in Paris will take a new turn in 2025. Heritage renovation and that of circulation system of this RATP airline must improve the safety and comfort of travelers. However, they require temporary traffic interruptions.

This Thursday, December 19, 2024, the line president Philippe Plessis gave the main directions of the project launched in 2017 and including the end point is planned for 2027. Between the installation of the new trains, the tests on the rails and the resumption of the signaling stations, the next year will see “an intensification of the construction site”.

Have the oars accepted

The 47 new MP89 trains, straight from line 4, are gradually arriving on line 6. By the end of next year, two thirds of the equipment will be installed. In 2025, around fifteen trains must be put in place to run between Charles-de-Gaulle Étoile and Nation.

There are things that are visible, some that are less visible and others that are not visible at all.

Director of line 6

On the user side, the modernization of the line offers larger spaces in the wagons and automation of door opening in particular. Security is also highlighted by the RATP which plans to install video surveillance cameras. In order to “better welcome travelers”, we must first accommodate the oars. The MP89s, considered “recent” and not “new”, require modifications to the tracks and platforms to “accept” the new gauges in the stations. The train repair workshop, located at Place d’Italie, has also “experienced a major transformation”. The signal boxes will be rebuilt with new spacing and maneuvering lights. Their operation will also be reviewed.

“Real mode” tests

Line 6 is particularly popular with travelers for its east-west route and its tourist character. “Its modernization requires reviewing the social part », Indicates its president. Training of drivers, terminal managers, maintainers, etc. They will have to respond to the use of the new systems. “Ease and responsiveness” on their part will ultimately “facilitate management in stations”, says Philippe Plessis.

To successfully complete the arrival of the new trains, tests will be carried out at night but also during the day, “in real mode”. Travelers will have to review their routes or take alternative buses. All temporary traffic interruptions will be accompanied by information via digital, sound and display channels. “Agents will be deployed in strategic locations,” underlines the director of the line built more than a century ago. And to summarize: “2025 will be a crucial yearfor line 6”, marked by the end of the first phase of its modernization. The second, still under study, will concern centralized control stations (PCC).
