Snowfall will therefore occur throughout the coming days in . At least the mountains will have fresh snow to start the Christmas holidays. But what are the expected quantities? Overview of weather forecasts.

Snow already present

After the snowfall that took place a few days ago, a mild spell melted the snow cover, particularly in the direction of the Vosges and the Jura. However, when we look at Météo-France readings on the stations of the Alps, the Central massif or even the Pyrenees and Corsica, a snow cover is always present.

For the Alps, we note for example 31cm in La Norma (73), 10cm in Allant (73). On the highest mountains, accumulations sometimes exceed 50-70cm of snow on the ground.

In the direction of the Central massif, the current accumulations are, for example, 31cm in Saint-Anthème (63) or even 13cm in Superbesse (63). In Corsica, we recorded 60cm at Maniccia (2B) at 2360m altitude and 24cm from the Canigou side in the Eastern Pyrenees.

New snowfall

This afternoon and night, snowfall will occur again on almost all terrain, including the lowest. Indeed, cold air arrives at altitude, favoring snow from 1300m sometimes less depending on the intensity of precipitation.

It is however towards the Alps that the heaviest snowfalls are announced with sometimes almost 8-10cm per hour. Thus, the Alps will sometimes be able to see 45-50cm of fresh snow by Friday morning.

On the other reliefs, count for this episode of 10 to 15cm locally a little more towards the Central massif or even the Pyrenees. For the Vosges and the Jura, 10 to 15cm are expected above 1100-1200m. Lower, 5 to 6cm are expected from 600m.

More significant snowfall is also expected by Sunday with the passage of a new very active disturbance. A winter break which should last until the beginning of next week.

In the end, by Monday evening almost 1m of snow is possible in the Alps, 30 to 60cm in the Jura and the Pyrenees and 20 to 40cm towards the Vosges peaks. These forecasts will be refined over the coming hours and days, particularly for Sunday’s deterioration.

Notice that in the plains, we could possibly have some traces of snow as showers pass by Sunday day and night from Sunday to Monday.
