The last Saupiquet factory in France located in Quimper (Finistère) will close its doors permanently on Friday December 20.
For sixty years, the factory has attracted seagulls to Quimper (Finistère), 20 km from the sea. But the banners denounce its relocation to Spain and Morocco. Friday December 20, 2024, Saupiquet will produce the ultimate canned fish. “It’s the last cannery in the area. It’s a shame.”regrets a deliveryman subcontractor of the factory.
Created in 1891 by an industrialist from Nantes, the brand has, a century later, 2,000 employees in ten production sites in France. But from the 1990s, factory closures continued. For its part, the Quimper factory, taken over by the Italian Bolton Food, had been operating at half its capacity for several months.
Some of the 150 employees describe a gloomy atmosphere, like mourning in the factory. While they deplore the decision to close the factory, the unions speak of peaceful departure negotiations. Ten employees are retiring, five positions are being offered in Spain or Italy and a job forum will be organized following the layoffs.
