In 2020, “he suspended his career as a professional athlete to provide front-line support during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada,” recalled the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, in a note.
The creation of the Laurent Duvernay-Tardif Foundation was also highlighted. For several years, the Montrealer has used two of his passions, sport and art, to promote the educational success of school-age children in Quebec.
In the NFL, the 33-year-old played for the Chiefs between 2014 and 2021 before having a short two-season stint with the New York Jets. He took another break in November 2022 to complete his medical residency, then announced his retirement from sport in September 2023.
Curling player Kevin Martin and commentator Scott Oake are other sports figures to be made members of the Order of Canada on Wednesday. Former president of the Canadian Olympic Committee Tricia Smith has become an officer.
