In a press release, the City of Valencia (Drome) welcomes the release of Paul Watson. After 149 days in prison in Denmark, this environmental activist, known for his commitment to the protection of the oceans and endangered marine species, in particular the whaleswas released on Tuesday, December 17, following the decision of the Danish government not to extradite him to Japan.
He was accused by the country of the rising sun of being responsible for damage and injuries aboard a Japanese whaling ship in 2010. The founder of l’association Sea Shepherd was the subject of an international arrest warrant.
A local commitment for a global cause
As soon as his arrest was announced in Greenland, on July 21, 2024, “while preparing to block the path of the Kangei Maru, a huge Japanese whaler intended to massacre thousands of whales, the City of Valencia took a strong position,” continues the municipality.
Under the leadership of Nicolas Daragon, mayor of Valence, the municipality invited citizens to mobilize for his release by signing a petition.
The release of Paul Watson is a victory for justice and a strong signal in favor of the defense of the oceans. Valencia mobilized without hesitation to support this man whose commitment to biodiversity is exceptional. Protecting our planet involves fighting human predation and respecting natural balances. The City of Valencia has been committed to ecology and animal welfare for more than 10 years, so we are proud to have contributed to this fight. This mobilization proves that, collectively, we can act to preserve life in all its forms. In summary, loving nature means preserving the living and the existing.
A register of signatures had also been made available at the reception of the town hall, allowing Valentinois to express their support. This initiative met with a strong local response, demonstrating exemplary solidarity in favor of this cause.
“Once again, Valencia reaffirms its values and its commitment to the defense of animal welfare, the environment and biodiversity,” the press release concludes.
