Last August, flexible bollards and other concrete ones were installed across this intersection. This development was intended to put an end to the practice of certain motorists using residential streets to bypass the traffic lights on Boulevards des Récollets and Boulevards des Forges. The City had also received several citizen requests concerning the high speed and traffic flow at this location, which is located near an elementary school and the CEGEP.
The Ensuring Sustainable Mobility in the City committee recommended, last November, “not to renew the pilot project in its initial form and to continue traffic surveys and periodic observations in order to validate the needs for moderation of automobile traffic “.
The City explained that the bollards had moved the problem to rue des Mélèzes. Additionally, comments from neighborhood residents “were mostly unfavorable.” Bollards had even been torn down a week before the City planned their removal.
In return, other permanent arrangements have been put in place. Thus, the signage for street parking has been improved to provide better visibility at intersections.
In addition, stops have been added in all directions at the intersections of rue des Mélèzes and rue de la Pinède as well as rue des Mélèzes and boulevard Laviolette. There was also an adjustment to the Société de transport de Trois-Rivières bus route.
The City will continue its observations to determine whether it needs to make other adjustments. “Everything is under review. We are not giving up to try to find solutions to secure places, but that’s what pilot projects are for,” commented Pierre Montreuil, president of the Ensuring Sustainable Mobility in the City committee.
