The place is full of bottles… and yet, not a drop of alcohol in this new cellar located on Place Occitane, in Toulouse. Soft and Curious opened at the beginning of December and is positioned as the first alcohol-free cellar in the Pink City.
Wines, beers and aperitif drinks
A good address for this young client, pregnanta few days before the end of year celebrations. “She told me that she missed the taste of wine,” explains Mathieu Wiart, the owner of the place. “I was able to introduce him to one of our bottles of non-alcoholic wine. »
In this pretty, slightly retro shopin pop colors, with antique Formica furniture, there are indeed many references. And not just orange juice or soda. Wines, beers and aperitif drinks feature very prominently. All without a drop of alcohol.
Carefully selected references
“I was working in festival bars during the summer, when a supplier let me taste his first non-alcoholic beer,” explains Mathieu Wiart. “It made me smile, until I tested it. She was really good, I said to myself: that’s it, we know how to make non-alcoholic beers that hold up. »
It was five years ago and it was the start of a path of discovery towards non-alcoholic drinks which led Mathieu to the opening of his store in Toulouse, with dozens of carefully selected references.
“Everything I put on sale, I have tasted before,” emphasizes Mathieu Wiart.
Sauvignon, fronton, riesling …
And the references are numerous. As for wine, you can buy a Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling or even Fronton. Soft and Curious also offers a bottle considered to be the best non-alcoholic wine in the world.
“More and more estates are switching to alcohol-free wine,” explains the wine merchant. And no, it’s not grape juice with sugar as we sometimes hear: the quality and taste are there. », adds the manager.
The taste, without the alcohol
The non-alcoholic beer offering is also generous, with some curiosities, such as an isotonic beer, supposed to help athletes recover better. As for non-alcoholic aperitif drinks, we find gin, rum or something to make spritzes For example. “You really feel the taste of the drinks, but without the alcohol,” explains the boss.
In addition to the cellar part, Soft and curious can also be enjoyed by the glass, since the establishment is a bar, with a small terrace on Place Occitane. And since the opening of the premises, attendance has been quite good. We can bet that in January, dry January will allow this new brand to make itself a little more known to Toulouse residents.
Alcohol-free is on the rise
The consumption of non-alcoholic drinks is on the rise in France. In Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Brittany… Many alcohol-free businesses have opened their doors in recent months in France. Nantes even hosted the first alcohol-free wine fair last September.
According to a study, a quarter of French people will have switched to non-alcoholic drinks in 2022.
