Ongoing sanitation work in Touba, located in central Senegal, is expected to be completed before the start of the next rainy (wintering) season, according to Omar Sène, director of sanitation at the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation. This initiative aims to resolve recurring flooding problems in the city, particularly in the most vulnerable neighborhoods.
During his statements, Omar Sène underlined the importance of collaboration between local actors, such as the Touba town hall, the Hizbut-Tarqiyyah association and the Touba Ça Kanam association. He specified that, following discussions between these actors and the ministry, a report detailing the emergency work to be carried out for the next rainy season was submitted to the Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation. This report led to precise instructions to complete the work before wintering in 2025.
The director of sanitation recalled that this work is carried out by the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS). Among the projects in progress are the channeling in several neighborhoods to improve the evacuation of rainwater and thus reduce the risk of flooding. In addition, the extension of the Keur Niang basin, which aims to double its water retention capacity, will be completed on time.
Another priority is the finalization of work to strengthen the drainage of rainwater around the great mosque of Touba, an emblematic site which requires particular attention to avoid inconvenience linked to heavy rains.
Omar Sène reiterated the commitment of the Senegalese authorities to structurally address the problem of flooding in Touba, through large-scale projects. For his part, the mayor of Touba, Abdou Lahat Ka, welcomed this commitment and assured that the town hall of Touba will do everything possible to support the government in the implementation of these projects, with the aim of improving the framework of life and well-being of the city’s inhabitants.
