The new officials of the European Commission, who have assumed their functions since December 1, take turns to shower Morocco with praise. After the remarks of the head of EU diplomacy, it is the turn of the Commissioner responsible for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, to follow the same line.
Following a telephone exchange with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, she stressed on the X platform that “Morocco is a key and reliable partner for the EU, in the Mediterranean and beyond in Africa”. The Croatian described her talks on Tuesday, December 17 with Nasser Bourita as “enriching”. “We discussed ways in which we can jointly strengthen our EU-Morocco partnership in all areas, thereby contributing to mutual growth and prosperity.”
Ms. Šuica announced, on November 5 during the examination by MEPs of her candidacy for the post of Commissioner responsible for the Mediterranean, her plan to propose to the kingdom to conclude an agreement with the European Union on the fight against irregular immigration. “We have good relations with Morocco. Morocco can help us and we can help it.”
As a reminder, the EU has already concluded partnerships in the fight against irregular immigration with Tunisia and Egypt, respectively in June 2023 and March 2024, in exchange for financial aid: 900 million euros intended for Tunis and 7.4 billion euros for Cairo.
