Roofs that are finally working!
Gone are the days of simple flat, soulless roofs. The president of Greater Lyon, Bruno Bernard, has just presented the new PLU-H (Local Urban Planning and Housing Plan) which plans to revolutionize the fate of Lyon’s roofs. From now on, each new construction of more than 10 m² must have a “useful” roof. But what do we mean by useful? Three options on the menu:
- Vegetation : roofs that become islands of coolness, perfect for combating urban heatwaves and welcoming biodiversity that we thought was lost.
- Solar panels: history that the Lyon sun, this faithful friend, provides green energy directly on site.
- Accessibility: transform your roofs into terraces to enjoy the view and aperitifs with neighbors. Yes, that sounds good!
Towards a boom in rooftops in Lyon?
If Lyon already has a few rooftops that delight locals and tourists, we are still a long way from cities like Paris, Lisbon or Madrid. With this reform, we can expect to see terraces sprouting in abundance in the years to come.Enough to enrich the offer for lovers of cocktails with a view, outdoor yoga enthusiasts and, more generally, great contemplators of the Lyon panorama.
Beyond the aesthetic and lifestyle aspect, this initiative is part of a logic of sustainable development: less concrete, more green and a Lyon that honors its reputation as a pioneer city in ecological transition.
