to this disaster, the Association of Mayors of France and its partners are launching the “AMF/Mayotte Solidarity” system. Quimper Bretagne Occidentale offers exceptional aid and invites municipalities to mobilize to support the reconstruction of the archipelago.
On Saturday, December 14, cyclone CHIDO, of exceptional intensity with winds reaching up to 220 km/h, devastated the Mayotte archipelago, which in 2010 became the 101st French department. The human, health and material consequences are not yet fully known, but initial findings on site indicate that they are catastrophic and long-lasting. A first provisional report communicated on December 16 reported 20 dead and 250 injured. Many people are missing and the final toll could be in the hundreds of dead and injured, according to local authorities. In addition to the precarious housing of the slums, numerous infrastructures suffered from the passage of the cyclone. This is particularly the case for many schools, traffic routes and water and electricity networks. The situation calls for emergency measures that state and municipal services have implemented under very difficult conditions.
In conjunction with the association of mayors of Mayotte, the Association of Mayors of France and Presidents of intermunicipalities has decided to set up a monitoring and support system “Solidarité AMF/Mayotte” to participate in the national mobilization in favor of the Mahorese population and support the mayors and elected officials of the territory in their immense task.
Unccas (National Union of CCAS) also asked all municipalities and intermunicipalities to activate their CCAS to organize the national mobilization in favor of Mayotte. The Udccas of Finistère should also pay an exceptional subsidy in favor of Mayotte. Civil Protection, one of the AMF’s partners within “Solidarité AMF/Mayotte”, is present in the region and is setting up a support system whose immediate objective is to respond to these first emergencies.
The president of Quimper Western Brittany will propose submitting exceptional aid of 5,000 euros to Civil Protection for a vote at the next Community Council in order to participate in this surge of solidarity.
Given the extent of the damage and the logistical difficulties in transporting material goods, the Agglomeration recommends giving priority to financial donations in order to effectively help the Mahorais and contribute to the reconstruction of the archipelago.
