DAKAR TOWN HALL DENOUNCES THE PREFECT’S ABUSE OF POWER AND CALLS FOR THE DEFENSE OF DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS

Aïda Niang, deputy mayor of Dakar, was the guest of the “Salaam Senegal” program on Radio Senegal. She expressed her concerns about the current political situation. She began by indicating her incomprehension regarding recent events, in particular the intervention of the prefect who made a very personal interpretation of article 277 of the electoral code.

She explained that this Friday, a meeting of the municipal office was planned, but that the police prevented it from taking place. Aïda Niang firmly affirmed that the municipal office is not obliged to inform the prefect about its meetings, describing this intervention as an abuse of power. She expressed confidence in the legal appeal their team has filed, convinced that justice will rule in favor of their case.

In her speech, Aïda Niang also reassured about the situation within Dakar town hall, which is functioning normally despite the tensions. She stressed that the special delegation has no legitimacy in this context, recalling that there is a process to follow for its establishment. She mentioned that Barthélémy Dias’s deputy has taken the reins of town hall since these events, and that the latter has been able to provide a satisfactory assessment since his arrival.

Aïda Niang highlighted the democratic character of the country, emphasizing the importance of respecting everyone’s rights. She also noted that the constitutional council, by accepting the candidacy file of Barthélémy Dias, resolved the question of the latter’s right to exercise his functions. Beyond the legislative texts, she insisted on the need to understand that everyone has the right to oppose, thus affirming their desire to defend democratic values.
