From the back of the Agrocentre hall, where bags of fertilizer are piled up, a powerful vibration noise escapes from large machines. Powered by an imposing funnel, a conveyor belt propels a buckwheat harvest onto three sieves. Each in turn, they remove the plant waste carried away during cutting, the seeds from other plants, and pour those that must be preserved into a bucket. “We then pass them through another machine which will remove the small stones, then into an optical sorter which separates the seeds according to their colors,” explains Ignace Berret in a voice covering the surrounding noise.

The manager of the Cooperative Society of Courtételle and surrounding areas, located in the center of the Jura village, is proud of this installation which makes it possible to clean 500 kg of material per hour. “Since it started 3 years ago, we have already sorted more than 40 different kinds of seeds. We had to release 40 tonnes per year to make it profitable. We did 60 the first year, 80 the second and it continues to increase. We have made a reputation for ourselves in this field, people sometimes come from far away to bring us their harvest!”
