Morocco, Portugal and Spain were officially designated as host countries for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, by the Congress of the International Federation of Football Association, meeting on Wednesday in an extraordinary session by videoconference.
During this session, chaired by FIFA President Gianni Infantino from Zurich, the members of Congress also validated the attribution of the three centenary matches in 2030 to Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, while that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been confirmed as the host country of the 2034 World Cup.
The three files were approved by acclamation by the 211 FIFA member federations, who voted separately on the nomination procedure adopted by FIFA and on the respective candidatures.
In a speech on this occasion, Mr. Infantino affirmed that “in today’s divided world (…) being able to agree on something like this represents an extraordinary message”.
“We live in unity. We live inclusiveness. We live football,” he declared solemnly.
The Morocco-Portugal-Spain 2030 candidacy offers varied and interesting options for its stadiums, which number 20: six in Morocco, three in Portugal and 11 in Spain.
This exceeds the minimum requirements (14 stadiums) defined for the 2030 World Cup, which provides sufficient flexibility to choose diverse and emblematic venues in the three countries, underlines the document, which notes that the stadiums of Santiago Bernabéu, in Madrid , Camp Nou, in Barcelona, and the Grand Stade Hassan II in Casablanca have been proposed for the opening and final matches.
