The New Democratic Party wanted to launch a debate on its resolution asking in particular to permanently abolish the GST on goods it considers essential.
However, Conservative Party Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman raised a point of privilege regarding a protest that occurred this week. She criticized three NDP MPs for verbally supporting those who were preventing the House of Commons from doing its job.
Around a hundred demonstrators organized a Tuesday sit-in inside the Confederation Building, one of the buildings housing MPs’ offices, to demand an embargo on arms sales to Israel.
The debates were devoted to the motion of Mr.me Lantsman and other points of privilege raised by elected officials throughout most of the morning in what appeared to be an effort to prevent discussion of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s motion.
The NDP adopted the same tactic on Thursday by delaying discussions on a Conservative motion by instead launching a debate on abortion.
