Landes: the renovation of Cathedral will be “one of the projects of the century”

It will be “probably the construction site of the century in “, says Alexis , deputy in charge of works at the town hall, referring to the scale and cost of the renovation of the cathedral.
Thursday, during the municipal council, the elected official presented a deliberation aimed at authorizing the city to request a subsidy to finance this initial work. This preliminary work will mainly focus on the roof of the historic monument, which has been seriously affected by water infiltration. A budget of 58,000 euros is planned for this initial phase, which will also include new expertise in order to more precisely assess the problems of the cathedral.

For a year, in-depth analyzes will be carried out to monitor the evolution of the cracks observed in the building and identify their causes, in particular by studying the cathedral's heating system.

23.9 million euros and at least a decade of work

A first assessment, already carried out by the city, revealed the extent of the necessary work, estimated at 23.9 million euros. For comparison, this amount exceeds the cost envisaged for the future Dacquoise performance hall, a flagship project led by the president of the Greater Dax agglomeration, Julien Dubois.

However, Alexis Arras warns that this renovation will take time:
« We are going to enter a phase of reflection and negotiation to organize such a vast project, which cannot be carried out in one piece. It can be estimated that at least a decade will be needed to complete the complete renovation of the cathedral. »
