An Argentine national who was held at the Administrative Detention Center (Cra) in Paris Vincennes died in hospital this Wednesday, November 27, after attempting suicide several times, announced the humanitarian association Assfam, which intervenes within the establishment.
“It is with great sadness that we learn that Mr. J., an Argentinian national, died on Wednesday, November 27 in the afternoon, while he was being held at the Paris-Vincennes administrative detention center,” reregrets the Assfam association (SOS group), in a press release of condolences.
According to the association, Mr. J. had been placed at the Paris-Vincennes CRA on November 18, 2024 by the Paris Police Prefect, with a view to his removal to Argentina. “The Police Prefect then considered that he did not present any particular state of vulnerability, despite several suicide attempts during the period of incarceration preceding his placement in detention. regrets the association.
Several suicide attempts
“On November 22, when the judge of freedoms and detention had just authorized the extension of his detention for a period of 26 days, Mr. J. was taken for a day to the psychiatric infirmary of the police headquarters following another suicide attempt. Despite this event, he was brought back to the detention center,” continues Assfam.
It is in this context that the Argentine national attempted suicide again on November 25, this time achieving his goals. He died in hospital on Wednesday November 27.
“The situation of Mr. J. dramatically illustrates the failures of the administration in terms of taking into account the vulnerability of the people detained when decisions are taken to place them in detention and throughout the procedure. At a time when the Minister of the Interior is increasing the number of announcements on the extension of the maximum period of detention, it also demonstrates the impact of confinement on the health of the people who undergo it, a subject on which our association has been alerting the authorities for many years,” deplores the association.
