After forty-eight years of interruption, a cyclo-cross was born again, this Sunday 1is December in Brèches, rebirth orchestrated by VS Neuillé-Pont-Pierre. On this occasion, the organization invited former pros, players in this cyclo-cross in their time: Jean-Pierre Danguillaume, twice winner, Gérard Besnard, Jacky Botherel and Enzo Mattioda. The circuit used at the time when Raymond Poulidor, Roger Pingeon and Luis Ocana honored the event with their presence has remained practically the same.
A route like we rarely see these days, made up of sunken paths, forest paths and fording. A natural route which required only a minimum of marking. But also a very physical circuit, muddy in places, including a long climb that the majority of runners climbed on foot. Enough to give pride of place to strong men and create significant gaps. Except in the access category, in which four competitors only managed to decide between themselves at the end of the final straight. We haven't seen this in ages, if not ever!
A solo raid and a battle for second place
The elite and open race did not take long to settle since Quentin Du Mouza took off as soon as the flag was lowered. His superiority was manifest. Those who were counting on a drop in speed on his part at the end of the race were at their expense.
A good distance from the future winner, Sarthois Yvonnick Lauger and Simon Millon engaged in a great battle for second place. Having let go for a moment, Simon Millon came back with a cannonball only to fail one length behind his opponent at the finish line. For Millon, the winter season ended there. In a week, he goes with his team, Guidon Chaletois, to the Côte-d'Azur for a first training camp.
It should be noted that the race was marked by numerous abandonments. The elites and opens only finished at seven, without Alan Riou, the pro of the Arkéa–B&B Hôtels team. Some were put off by the difficulties of the course, others disabled and discouraged by punctures.
As for Quentin Du Mouza, he showed promising form one week before the regional championship. On Saturday, he finished second in the Regional Cup in Rebréchien, in Loiret, behind the inaccessible Mathieu Morichon.
