A dead seal was found in the middle of a road in Côtes-d'Armor on Thursday November 28. The animal was more than two kilometers from the sea, which is very rare.
Several Breton motorists witnessed an unusual scene on Thursday, November 28. Indeed, a dead seal was found in the morning on the RD 15 in Loguivy-de-la-Mer, near Ploubazlanec (Côtes-d'Armor). Increasingly frequently spotted off the coast of Saint-Brieuc Bay, the animal was located more than two kilometers from the sea, reported West France.
When questioned, the mayor of Ploubazlanec indicated that he was going to contact a rendering company to come and collect the animal, which had been placed at the side of the road. A marine mammal association from Brittany was also asked to understand the causes of the seal's death. The National Stranding Network (RNE), a participatory science program and the main tool for monitoring marine mammal strandings, was also informed of the situation. “Seals live in the water or on the sand. They are generally found dead on the sand because they are brought in by the tide. Seeing one more than 2 km away is very rare. We don't know how it got there”said the RNE coordinator.
Seals increasingly present in the Breton bay
The carcass of the animal was taken in charge on Friday November 26 by the French Biodiversity Office to undergo an autopsy. “Samples will also be taken from the animal. This is the protocol if the carcass is sufficiently fresh”said the coordinator. At this stage of the investigations, no preliminary investigation has been opened by the gendarmerie.
In recent months, more and more seals have been present in the bay of Saint-Brieuc. “These mammals come looking for food. This shows that the bay is doing well. It is an indicator of the presence of fish, particularly migratory ones. They also stop here to rest for an extended period of time. A necessary break for their biological cycleexplained a technical guard from the Saint-Brieuc reserve.
