2,350 children and teenagerswho came from all over the Channel, had a blast around the Château de Flamanville, in the afternoon of this Wednesday November 27, 2024during the UNSS departmental cross. In all, these are eight official racesfrom the youngest to the juniors, which took place, to which must be added two mixed relay races: the “Shared Sport” race and the “musketeers” race.

Primary school students were also invited to the party. The runners competed on a course “about as hard as that of last year, in Graignes, but perhaps a little more fun”, judges Emmanuel Ernault, director of the UNSS de la Manche, organizer of the day. The distances covered ranged from 1,500 meters for the primaries, up to 4,480 meters for the junior and senior boys. The junior male category brought together more than 470 runners, the record for this edition.

A superb atmosphere

In all, 75 establishments made the trip to Flamanville, sometimes from quite a distance, such as the students of the Émile-Littré high school in Avranches or those of Le Verrier, in Saint-Lô.

The wind and cold were present in -Cotentin, but the rain stopped a few dozen minutes before the start. The young people finished their race covered in mud, but the atmosphere was warm, the encouragement, the shouts and the incessant applause, and the handshakes between winners and losers full of fair play. If some were aiming for a good place, or even victory, many were racing for the pleasure of going to the end.

The Holy Grail of the UNSS

We no longer counted the “well done!” “, ” well done ! “, ” Congratulations ! » of all these middle and high school students, who fell into each other's arms once the race was over. Everyone congratulated each other, sometimes under the eyes of their parents, always under the caring gaze of their PE teachers.

“It’s great, that’s why we do this job. And then, the departmental cross country is a bit like UNSS Holy Grailone of the most important days for us and for all the participants,” exclaims Emmanuel Ernault, who took on the role of speaker for the day.

The surroundings of the castle were punctuated by the music of the moment, broadcast by Radio Flam (90.6FM), which added even more joy to the atmosphere around the Flamanville castle. “Thank you to Flamanville, who made everything available to us, it’s a huge help! », slips to finish Emmanuel, between two medal presentations to the departmental champions.
