Have we ever seen such a gathering under the windows of the Hôtel de Région des Pays de la Loire? Monday, November 25, 3,000 demonstrators, mainly from the local cultural world, protested. “Culture: everything will disappear”, we can read on the signs held up.
Faced with the protests, the regional majority of the right and the center (57 elected officials) united behind its president, Christelle Morançais. In the media and on social networks, everyone claims to support the “unprecedented turn of the screw” announced in mid‐October: 100 million euros less spending in regional finances. Clear cuts which go well beyond the 38 million savings envisaged by the Barnier government, but which should make it possible, according to its president (Horizons), to refocus the Region on its “most legitimate and most useful” missions: “employment, youth, transitions”.
It is no coincidence that Christelle Morançais began her undermining work by targeting, in mid-November, “subsidized” and “politicized” culture (read: on the left). While a litany of cuts is being reported in the press which go – de facto – well beyond culture, targeting this sector makes it possible to unite its majority and not frighten its electoral base.
However, the 73% reduction in subsidies allocated to the cultural world does not come alone. It would be 64% overall for the culture, sport and associations commission, for an operating budget increasing from 33.9 to 12.8 million euros, according to our projections. And other cuts are starting to appear in employment, agriculture, research, etc. [voir notre tableau].
