This is a problem that has already been affecting the canton of Mouthe in Doubs and the border areas with Switzerland for several years. Several livestock have reportedly been attacked over the past year by the wolf. The FDSEA and the Young Farmers 25 count 31 cow deaths just in the Mouthe area. In response to this poster, an activist from the Defend the Wolf association responded on Facebook to this message which he defines as “lie”, “in painting the devil on the wall”.

This poster was quickly removed on the road to Frasnes, coming from Bonnevau. “It's a message, we can no longer let this get through. We don't attack wildlife without having valid figures to back it up and above all we don't put up slogans that talk about our children, who don't have nothing to fear from animals.

“It’s not possible, we have to educate these people. It’s shocking to take emotions by using children in their slogans”she says. “They talk about 31 attacks, but it’s more like 20, they do everything to scare people and increase the distrust of the population on the subject of wolves”details Julie Giraud.

The number of attacks on the canton of Mouthe amounts to around 30

Benoît Fabbri

Departmental Director of DDT

To distinguish fact from fiction, we turned to the Departmental Directorate of Doubs Territories (DDT 25) which counts wolf attacks, but also the number of cattle killed. For Benoît Fabbri, the departmental director, there is a mistake. “I think that in this case, there are figures that have been mixed up. First of all, the number of attacks on the canton of Mouthe is around thirty. However, this is the number of cattle killed during of attacks which amounts to 20”.

A confusion which led to the removal of this tarpaulin, but which did not change Julie Giraud's point of view on the slogan, which she defined “a distorted message, like children have never been impacted by the wolf”.
