“It’s Jesus!” we would have heard Tuesday evening, during the general assembly of the Yverdon Socialist Party. The only contender, Julien Wicki seems to have everything of the providential man – both for the activists and for the four pink-green municipalists who surrounded him the next day at a press conference – to succeed their late comrade and municipal Jean-Claude Ruchet, died in office almost a month ago.

Aged 42 and father of three children, the history teacher and dean at the Yverdon Gymnasium is a socialist figure in the spa town. President of the PS-POP group, he has served on the Municipal Council since 2016 and was for three years the personal collaborator of State Councilor Cesla Amarelle. Previously, he was involved with student associations, in the trade union struggle and in the field of asylum.

“Being municipal is the honor of a lifetime,” said Julien Wicki. He wishes to defend four priorities: the family, seniors, integration and the fight against violence against women. “My deep conviction is that a politician must know how to listen and act,” said the one who wants to meet all political groups and associations. In the event of an election on February 9 (or March 2 in the event of a second round), he will take leave from his job to concentrate completely on his mission to relieve the municipal team.

“He will bring his fine analytical skills and his ability to carry out a titanic task in record time,” said Pascale Fischer, president of the local PS. The socialist trustee Pierre Dessemontet praises his ability “to discuss both on his left and on his right to find compromises, essential qualities”. “He is inhabited by a sense of duty and kindness,” continued Green co-syndicator Carmen Tanner.

A candidate of the united right

Unless there is a surprise candidacy, Yverdon voters will be entitled to a duel. Meeting on Monday, the leaders of the PLR, the UDC and the Vert'liberals agreed on the need to nominate a single and unifying candidate. Also present that evening, The Center did not adhere to this decision, considering in view of the context surrounding this supplement that the vacant seat should rightfully go to the Socialists.

Julien Wicki's opponent will be validated within a few days by members of the three parties. The UDC, like the PLR and the Vert'liberaux, will be able to propose a name that evening. If the UDC will rely on its new president, Sophie Pistoia, the Vert'libéraux will first have to choose between two candidates for candidacy. Nothing has yet been decided within the PLR, where contacts are underway.
