a Christian breath at the Off Avignon Festival

“This time, there is a chance that my show will reach an even wider audience than last year!” For the second consecutive year, Bruno Durand, a regular actor at the Avignon Festival – he has been going there for 40 years – will perform a Christian-inspired play:
Nothing but the essentials. With François Pilon, he will embody the incredible but true meeting between Abbé Pierre and Coluche.

Back to the facts: on March 25, 1986, the famous comedian brought a check for 1.5 million francs to the star priest. Coluche wanted this sum, corresponding to the profits generated by the first Restos du Coeur campaign, to go to Emmaüs, since he did not intend to continue the Restos. Abbé Pierre did not see it that way and tried to convince him to continue the adventure. Commitment, solidarity, conscience, freedom, faith in God… are all themes addressed in this dialogue that is both funny and profound, written from statements by Abbé Pierre.

Nothing but the essentials (Coluche and Abbé Pierre).

Bruno Durand is therefore convinced: with Coluche and Abbé Pierre, the audience will not be exactly the same as that of the 2023 season where he played two solo shows, one on Charles de Foucauld, the other on Madeleine Delbrêl, two figures of the 20th century Church. “Last year, the audience was mainly Christian or in search of faith. This summer, there will also be, I hope, people attracted by the freedom of thought of Abbé Pierre, who was not afraid to say things not always in line with Roman doxa.”
