26 murals in Lyon have been identified by a committee of experts. The owners of these painted walls will be able to benefit from assistance from the City of Lyon for restoration work.
Denis Lang knows the City Library. Ce painted wall is located near the fishing quay, opposite the eponymous bar. A stone’s throw from the booksellers’ stalls. And if Denis knows this fresco well, it’s because he lives in the neighborhood. But also because he chairs Safeguarding and Beautifying Lyon.
The association contributes, through its actions and proposals, to the safeguarding and enhancement of artistic, architectural and urban heritage of the city. And as a result, it looks after a very Lyonnais heritage: that of painted walls which the city can be proud of. Sauvegarde et Embellissement de Lyon was associated with the reflection around the renovation of the frescoes.
There are some in all four corners of the city. But some are almost 50 years old. With pollution, bad weather, graffiti, some of these frescoes need to be refreshed.
Up to 80% aid from the City of Lyon to restore a remarkable fresco
The bill of restoration amounts to 14,000 euros, for example, for the Fresco of the ” City Library“. Until now, owners had to make this investment and some simply gave up on it. This is why the Cinematograph Frescoin La Guillotière, is today in a pitiful state.
Also, the City of Lyon has set up a “reinforced support” system for 26 painted walls. To find out more, we met Sylvain Godinot2nd deputy mayor of Lyon and delegate for Ecological Transition and Heritage.

In Lyon, the painted walls appeared at the end of the 70s. The first of them, in Oullins: the RenaissanceThis birth in the din of the sheet metal of the SNCF workshops of La Mouche was going to provoke many reactions. The Renaissance is now popular and the people of Oullins wanted to preserve and renovate it in 2018.

More grandiose, the 25 painted walls of Tony Garnier Urban Museum in the United States… These frescoes on the gable walls of the district pay homage to the famous architect Tony Garnier, at the origin of this HLM city that he designed, between 1920 and 1933. They also show the project of Ideal Cityan unfinished project by the most Lyonnais of architects.
So many achievements born from the imagination of mural painters associated under the name of City of Creation. But not only that! For each fresco, the habitantsTHE associations and all the neighborhood actors are associated with the achievement.
Today, CityCreation has several branches around the world but is more discreet in Lyon. Severine Garden took over from Gilbert Coudene and the founding artists a few years ago. And the SCOP hopes to create new frescoes in Lyon, forever its birthplace.

Wherever you are in Lyon, open your eyes and you will discover, for sure, one of its 180 nuggets that tell the story of our city…
