At the end of the debate, each candidate had one minute to convince voters, in a face-to-camera session without questions. The outgoing MP, Charles Fournier (NFP), thanked the mobilization that allowed him to obtain 7,000 more votes than in 2022. He spoke about his actions on the ground with his transformation projects both to give purchasing power and “engage in the energy transition, otherwise the rest will not hold”.

For Benoist Pierre (Together for the Republic), the proposed choice opposes “two world views”with on one side a “Bankruptcy announced, more unemployment, inflation and public deficits”. “Freedom against the statism of the left front”, he summarizes.

What governance?

Asked about the broader situation of the National Rally’s weight in the National Assembly, the candidates both ignore how the period after July 7, 2024 will unfold. “All hypotheses are possible, including that of a technical government, with people from the former majority,” said Charles Fournier.

Benoist Pierre calls for a “majority of projects, to discuss in order to obtain convergences.” Approval from Charles Fournier with a small comment: “There was a measure that Macron had announced but not proposed: proportional voting.”

In their own way, each is arguing for an assembly adapted to counter-power, rather than to the outlet to which voters were entitled this winter and, perhaps, in the coming months.
