Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Tuesday that he will convene a meeting with prime ministers to adopt a “Team Canada” response to Donald Trump’s threat to impose heavy tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports.
Speaking ahead of a cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, Trudeau said he had a good conversation with the US president-elect on Monday evening, highlighting the effective ties between the two countries.
Prime Minister Trudeau also spoke with his counterparts from Ontario, Doug Ford, and from Quebec, François Legault.
Mr. Ford, who chairs the Council of the Federation, had written to Mr. Trudeau to request an urgent meeting to discuss a unified approach on everything from trade and border security to energy, defense and through cross-border supply chains.
Mr. Trudeau says it’s time to put partisanship aside and take a “Team Canada” approach.
He said the meeting with the prime ministers will take place this week.
“We must work together to defend the interests of Canadians,” he said. We have already done this, we can do this and we will do it responsibly. »
