Tadej Pocagar (UAE Emirates, stage winner and yellow jersey):
“This stage gives me a lot of confidence, even though I already had a lot before. I knew I could make up a few seconds, but to do it this way is really special. I am extremely happy and motivated to continue on this path throughout the Tour. I am in great shape, better than last year. We will continue like this, day by day. The week will be a little difficult though, with the individual time trial.”
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step, second overall and white jersey):
“I had good legs. Tadej’s attack was severe. We know his qualities, when he attacks it’s really explosive. I tried to go for it but I didn’t have the same speed in my legs as him, nor did Jonas. I made a few mistakes at the start of the descent on the wet road, I took risks to get back to Jonas, I almost paid cash for it. I slipped two, three times and I lost a bit of confidence. I came back with Rodriguez, Primoz (Roglic) and Ayuso, it was pretty good and I did a good sprint for second place.”
Guillaume Martin (Cofidis, 17th and first Frenchman overall):
“The day was very intense, with a very fast tempo from UAE Emirates, who had a plan in mind. It was rolling climbs. At the foot of the Galibier, I was already well tested. I found my rhythm in the Galibier. I suspected that it would be difficult to follow the leaders. There is nothing exceptional, but it is not catastrophic either. I lost time, I will probably have opportunities to slip in front in the second or third week.”
Pavel Sivakov (UAE Emirates, teammate of Pogacar):
“That was the plan, we did exactly what we had to do. It paid off. Tadej feels great. It was the first mountain stage before three flat stages. We had ticked this stage off, we are happy to take the jersey. It is better to be in yellow than the opposite. It is really a great result, he took time on all his rivals. We could not have imagined better.”
