Record first round of legislative elections

Voter turnout in the Rhône was exceptional this year, with a turnout of 71.65%.as confirmed by Lyon News. Contrary to the national trend, the New Popular Front (NFP) dominated the first round in the department, particularly in the commune of Vaulx-en-Velin and in the 2nd constituency of the Rhône. This commune in the Lyon metropolitan area, the fourth largest city in terms of population, showed strong support for the left.

The RN in difficulty in Vaulx-en-Velin and in the 2nd constituency

In Vaulx-en-Velin, the National Rally obtained only 17.79% of the votesrising to second place, far behind the NFP. LFI candidate Abdelkader Lahmar largely dominated with 65.02% of the votes. This strong preference for the left contributed to making Vaulx-en-Velin the town in the Rhône that voted the least for the RN.

In the 2nd constituency of the Rhône, the RN also had difficulty attracting voters. Boris Tavernier, the NFP candidate, almost won in the first round with 49.65% of the vote, while RN candidate Anaëlle Bisleau only won 14.30%, failing to qualify for the second round. This constituency, which includes the 1st and 4th arrondissements as well as part of the 2nd and 9th arrondissements of Lyon, gave the RN its lowest score in the department with 8,228 votes.

A second round that promises to be crucial

With 2,256 votes out of 25,100 registered and 12,908 voters in Vaulx-en-Velin, the RN has a low score in this town. RN candidate Cédric Pignal, who nevertheless qualified for the second round, will try to get back on track on July 7. The left, represented by the NFP, remains the big favorite to continue to dominate this region.

The 2024 legislative elections show a distinct electoral dynamic in the Rhône, notably with strong resistance to the National Rally in Vaulx-en-Velin. The city stands out as a bastion of the leftconfirming a trend where the NFP is asserting itself against the extreme right and the presidential camp.
