RN vote stronger in peri-urban areas. It is first and foremost the social composition of the territories which determines the vote: this is the conclusion of a geographical analysis of the RN vote in the first round carried out by researcher Olivier Bouba-Olga. “We see that the scores are higher in peri-urban areas, where people with few qualifications, workers or retirees, homeowners, who travel to work by car are over-represented,” explains the social science researcher from the University of Poitiers, who has drawn up an initial map of voting in 539 constituencies, excluding overseas territories and French people abroad. “The constituencies where the proportion of people living in the peri-urban areas is higher are those where we observe the highest far-right scores”he explains, a suburban France with which Emmanuel Macron missed his meeting, as recounted Liberation yesterday. Unsurprisingly, the RN is over-represented around the Mediterranean, but also in part of the former Aquitaine outside Bordeaux, in Central Brittany, part of Normandy, in large parts of the North, North-East and Centre-East, as well as in Corsica. Another lesson is that the RN vote is over-represented “among those with few qualifications, holders of a CAP-BEP, more than among those without qualifications”. As for the European elections, Olivier Bouba-Olga points out that the only geographical reading of the vote is not relevant, insofar as “It’s not because we live in rural or peri-urban areas that we vote more RN” more “because we are less qualified or more working class.” “A worker, whether in rural or urban areas, will be more likely to vote RN,” he specifies, calling for “not to oppose territories.”
