The swimming pool, balneotherapy center of the Saint-Jacques hospital (CHU de Nantes) has been closed since July 18, 2022. On July 8, 2024, it will once again receive seriously injured patients hospitalized at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (MPR) of Saint-Jacques.

This equipment, which is very important in the treatment protocol, will therefore have remained closed for almost two years. It is an essential rehabilitation tool, emphasize the medical specialists. Especially for cases of multiple trauma.” But since July 18, 2022, accident victims have been deprived of it.

The reason for this delay – which doctors, carers and patients considered to be far too long? “The incident was linked to the ejection of a connection at the outlet of a filtration pump, on a highly technical installation. The analysis of the causes of this incident and the definition of the work to be carried out required different expertise, involving several trades”, explains the management of the CHU.

Finally, work covered by insurance was able to take place in the first half of the year. And the balneotherapy center was able to be put back into operation in recent weeks, for testing. This equipment is part of the new buildings of the MPR service, opened in December 2020. At the time, the balneotherapy pool – four times larger than the old one – had been presented in glowing terms.

Created in 1978, the physical medicine and rehabilitation center of the Nantes University Hospital supports more than 10,000 patients each year in hospital and in consultation. Some are admitted for fractures, others have spinal cord injuries causing tetraplegia and paraplegia.

Having become obsolete, the center located on the site of the Saint-Jacques hospital was the subject of a two-phase reconstruction. The last works were completed this year.
