Still waterproofing problems on the Chaumont viaduct. Result: SNCF Réseau is (re)launching a construction site with the consequences of interrupting rail traffic on the structure from July 8 to August 11. Bricon station will reopen for connections with Paris.

The dates are known. The new construction site managed by SNCF Réseau on the Chaumont viaduct will take place from July 8 to August 11. The main consequence is the total cessation of train traffic on the structure during this period. Alternative means will be put in place to allow passengers to make their journeys. To put it simply: Bricon station will be temporarily reopened and passengers on line 4 (connections with Troyes and Paris) will be transported by coach between Chaumont station and Bricon station.

For the Reims-Chaumont-Dijon line, Bologna station will be the drop-off point with replacement coaches between Chaumont and Bologna. In short, you take a train then a coach and get back on the train. Except in the Chaumont area, trains will run normally.

A new chapter in this Viaduct renovation project

It is still water infiltration problems that lead SNCF Réseau to restart a project after work already carried out for the same reasons in 2016 and 2019. “Disorders are still being observed”notes the SNCF to explain “a new intervention this summer.” This case, with its serious consequences, particularly financial, and involving problems with the execution of works and controls, is never-ending.

The phasing of the new construction site, costing 2.1 million euros, is as follows: removal of the track (rails, sleepers, ballast) and removal of waterproofing over the entire 3e level; installation of the new waterproofing complex and re-laying of the track. Around 40 people will be mobilized on this site. SNCF Réseau announces an investment envelope of 261 million euros in Grand Est in 2024 for the modernization of the structures.

Pedestrian access: not for now

The Chaumont viaduct, the largest stone structure in France.

At the end of this summer’s work, an observation will be set up for 2 years to check that the waterproofing of the structure is working properly. If this is the case, SNCF Réseau will undertake masonry work to allow the pedestrian path to reopen safely.

Vigilance at level crossings

In order to allow the passage of work trains, two level crossings located in the commune of Bricon will be closed to pedestrian and road traffic from July 8 to August 11. Diversions for cars will be proposed. Road signs will be put in place.

  • Means implemented to still allow travelers to travel.
