Contaminated by a toxic plant, herbal teas recalled throughout France: News

Four herbal teas sold by the modern herbalist Yves Moreau in Perpignan are being recalled because they were contaminated by datura, a plant that can be toxic, RMC reported on Tuesday July 2.

Possible poisoning for several hours or several days… Several references of herbal teas marketed by the modern herbalist Yves Moreau, particularly online, are being recalled throughout France, RMC reported on Tuesday July 2.

The reason: contamination with tropical alkaloids, toxic molecules present in datura, a toxic plant. Four herbal teas are affected by this recall: liver herbal tea, if purchased between May 31 and June 25, 2024, happiness herbal tea, if purchased between January 31 and June 25, 2024, dodo herbal tea, if purchased between February 29 and June 25, 2024 and light digestion herbal tea, if purchased between April 30 and June 25, 2024.

Risks for consumers

Datura, the cause of these contaminations, is a toxic plant which can have hallucinogenic effects.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty reminds that “datura is a herbaceous plant, which is found in fields and which contains, in particular in its seeds, alkaloids”. Ingested in too high a dose, they can cause “dry mouth, dilated pupils, visual disturbances, tachycardia, agitation, confusion, spatiotemporal disorientation, hallucinations, incoherent speech”.

This consumption can lead to moderate intoxication lasting eight to twelve hours or severe intoxication lasting two to three days. People who are in possession of these herbal teas are advised to stop consuming them and to contact their point of sale.
