Switzerland wants to ban nuclear weapons

The Alliance for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons calls on Switzerland to join the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) through a federal popular initiative.

Switzerland must join the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). The Alliance for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is launching a federal popular initiative to this effect.

The signatories include former Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey (PS), Green Party President Lisa Mazzone, former National Councillor Dominique de Buman (PDC/FR) and Jacques Dubochet, Nobel Prize winner in chemistry in 2017.

The text also finds support from a broad alliance of elected representatives: State Councillor Carlo Sommaruga (PS/GE), as well as National Councillors Fabian Molina (PS/ZH), Marionna Schlatter (Greens/ZH), Marc Jost (PEV/BE) and Melanie Mettler (PVL/BE).

The initiative is still supported by NGOs and the Group for a Switzerland without an Army. The committee has until January 2, 2026 to collect 100 000 signatures. (chl/ats)
