You may have come across some amazing fire trucks on the road. That’s normal. This Monday, 1is July 2024, the Pyrénées-Orientales firefighters welcomed reinforcements from Romania. For a month, 40 firefighters Romanians will come to support the SDIS 66.
40 firefighters from Romania as reinforcements
This column, which has just arrived from Romania, is made up of 10 officers and of 30 firefighters. They are all military. They are sent for a month to the Pyrénées-Orientales. A relief, with 40 new firefighters, is planned for July 15.
Throughout the month of July, these firefighters will provide support during forest fires. They will not go directly to fight the flames, fire hose in hand.
These men will join the forest fire power supply group (GALFF). Their role will be to ensure the water supply of the machines deployed in the summer disasters.
Up to 7 forest fire intervention groups this summer
In addition to this European reinforcement, the Catalan firefighters can count on two water bombing helicopters (HBE) this summer. The first will be ready until September, while the other will be operational between July and August. The aircraft Horus will still be responsible for ensuring active surveillance from the air.
On the ground, “the summer system will be made up of six to seven forest fire intervention groups (GIFF), instead of four previously,” announced Hermeline Malherbe, president of the Department and head of the board of directors of SDIS 66.
