Most of the 32 left-wing candidates elected on Sunday entered the Palais-Bourbon on Monday, July 1. All are torn between the joy of being re-elected and the fear of seeing the far right in the majority in six days.
They had recently separated and did not necessarily imagine that they would meet again on July 1st at the National Assembly. So despite the far-right wave that swept over France on Sunday evening, the rebellious deputies re-elected in the first round are showing a few smiles this Monday afternoon in front of the entrance to the Palais-Bourbon. Eric Coquerel kisses Aymeric Caron, Aymeric Caron hugs Danielle Obono, Danielle Obono looks “la Chiki” (Sophia Chikirou), hidden behind a sea of journalists. Seeing the photographers jostling for position, Sarah Legrain goes on with her political metaphor: “It’s like those who come second and third in the legislative elections. If you all make the effort to step back a little, we’ll get there.”
Under a discreet sun playing hide-and-seek between the clouds, a majority of the 32 candidates of the New Popular Front elected in the first round on Sunday came to pop in for the first time in their term at the National Assembly. The communists, socialists and ecologists came to collect their new badges and have their official photos taken drop by drop. As for the rebels, they arrived in groups, rather smiling, just to take a first photo on the steps of the Palais-Bourdon. “We can’t say that we separated so long ago, we barely had time to say phew that we are already back. But we are happy that so many of us were re-elected in the first round.”se f
