Klay Thompson’s number 11 will be retired by the Warriors!

Klay Thompson is leaving the Golden State Warriors after 13 years, but his legacy will forever be in the Oakland Bay Area. The California franchise confirmed the future retirement of the guard’s jersey less than 24 hours after he left the team.

A few hours after the official announcement of Klay Thompson’s departure for the Dallas Mavericks, the Golden State Warriors released a statement to pay tribute to one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise.

While most of the message is a reminder of the accomplishments Klay Thompson has made in the blue, white and gold jersey, one of the last sentences confirmed what we already suspected; the guard’s number 11 will forever float from the ceiling of Chase Center.

“Klay’s (Thompson) legacy will live on forever and we look forward to the day we can retire his No. 11 jersey from the ceiling of Chase Center. He will join a group of Warriors immortals including those with whom he built the franchise’s recent history.”

The jerseys already retired by the Golden State Warriors are those of Wilt Chamberlain, Tom Meschery, Al Attles, Chris Mullin, Rick Barry and Nate Thurmond. Given the message, we understand that those of Stephen Curry and Draymond will also quickly be hung at the top of the room.

While the possibility of Klay Thompson’s number being retired eventually left little room for doubt, it’s rare for a team to announce its decision so quickly. The #11 is a franchise legend and is treated as such even hours after his departure.

Players who have won four rings under the same jersey are rare and Klay Thompson is one of them. Retiring his jersey was a no-brainer, but confirmation was needed… and it didn’t take long.
