Senators trade Chychrun to Capitals for Jensen

The Ottawa Senators traded defenseman Jakob Chychrun to the Washington Capitals for defenseman Nick Jensen and a third-round pick in the 2026 draft on Monday.

Chychrun, 26, has one season remaining on a six-year contract signed with the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 13, 2018. He could become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. The Senators acquired him from the Coyotes on March 1, 2023, in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 second-round pick and a 2026 second-round pick.

Chychrun had 41 points (14 goals, 27 assists) in 82 games last season, posting a minus-30 rating, tied for worst on the Senators with forward Dominik Kubalik.

Drafted by the Coyotes in the first round (16th overall) in 2016, Chychrun has 216 points (76 goals, 140 assists) in 467 regular season games with the Senators and Coyotes as well as one goal in nine Stanley Cup playoff games.

Jensen, 33, has two seasons remaining on a three-year contract he signed with the Capitals on Feb. 28, 2023.

He had 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) in 78 games with the Capitals this season. He played in one playoff game.

Drafted in the fifth round (150th) by the Detroit Red Wings in 2009, Jensen has 134 points (19 goals, 115 assists) in 562 career regular season games with the Capitals and Red Wings. He has played 27 playoff games, recording no points.
