The two caryatids, undoubtedly preparatory for the straight legs of a fireplace, are probably the fruit of a new collaboration between Ledoux and Moitte, perhaps for the Hosten hotel, the architect's last work. It will be noted that one of them has a Corinthian capital, the other an Ionic capital, which suggests that these are preparatory studies for a project that has not yet been completed, or that it was of sketches for two separate chimneys showing different orders.
