Legislative elections 2024: Florence Lasserre withdraws her candidacy in the 5th constituency of Pyrénées-Atlantiques

While she had the possibility of remaining for the second round of the early legislative elections on July 7, with 26.63% of the votes cast, Florence Lasserre withdrew her candidacy. She announced this via a press release sent today to the editorial staff. “On June 30, you went massively to the polls. I would like to salute the citizen mobilization and thank the 18,700 voters who supported my project and my democratic values,” she begins. “In view of the results of the first round, it is clear that the Republican alliance, from the social democrats to the right, which I called for to preserve the stability of the nation, will not allow us to have a stable majority to govern the country. I have therefore decided to clarify my position and withdraw my candidacy of the second round of the legislative elections in the 5th constituency of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. I call on my voters to vote conscientiously and responsibly, faithful to the values that we have always shared.”

The weight of Jean-René Etchegaray?

In this constituency, voters made the choice on June 30 to place former socialist deputy Colette Capdevielle (beaten by Florence Lasserre in 2017) in the lead with 32.30% of the votes and in second position, the National Rally candidate Serge Rosso , 27.54%. Florence Lasserre therefore only came in 3rd position (26.63%). His Modem label allowed him to have a little freedom from the instructions of the Prime Minister Gabriel Attal who asked the candidates of the Ensemble coalition not to remain as part of a triangular with an RN candidate. And this, to block far-right candidates.

On Sunday evening, after the vote, Florence Lasserre’s statements suggested that she would remain in office, as did the comments made by her father, President of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques Departmental Council, Jean-Jacques Lasserre, in South West who did not see why these candidates came in third position “would withdraw”.

The president of the Modem, François Bayrou, seemed to let her choose, as for the president of the Pays Basque agglomeration, member of Ensemble, Jean-René Etchegaray, he had an opinion, which he wished to keep to himself, he confided to France Blue Basque Country.
