Their arrival was so awaited: the two new peacocks from the Parc des Promenades, Alençon (Orne), finally arrived at their new address, Monday July 1st. Almost a year after the death of their illustrious predecessor.

The successors of the illustrious Leo

Leon the peacock, the park’s true mascot, died of old age on July 25, 2023. An announcement that did not leave the locals indifferent. A vote launched on social networks was unanimous among residents: he needed one or more successors.

The municipality was initially hesitant: “The peacock regularly left the park and caused some problems. We did not want to make an immediate decision,” says Joaquim Pueyo, mayor of Alençon. The news finally came in mid-December: the park will indeed find a peacock. And even two.

Two brothers born in 2019

These are two blue peacocks from the same litter. The young brothers were born in 2019 at the Écouves animal park, where he still resided yesterday. “They are identified with a transponder and dewormed,” reveals Vincent Chauvin, director of the animal park, located in Bouillon.

The new arrivals are described as “inseparable” according to the mayor of Alençon. And a little shy: they were somewhat reluctant to come out of their cage during their presentation, in the presence of elected officials and residents.

A temporary sailboat was installed in their enclosure to allow them to “integrate into the environment”, “not frighten them” and prevent the birds from fleeing. “They hover and can go very far,” emphasizes Vincent Chauvin.

Not yet baptized!

And their name? They don’t have one yet. The municipality wants to launch a public consultation to allow residents to express their ideas. “We need a positive name, which makes us dream,” smiles the mayor of Alençon.

The arrival of the siblings at the Promenades marks the return of a close bond between the site and these gallinaceous birds. The park had up to twenty peacocks in the 1990s. There was only one couple left in 2010 and then, when the female died that year, the famous Léon remained the last survivor. Until his death in July 2023.
