Every summer, the Cannes City Hall organizes the Musée Ephémère du Cinéma to highlight the behind the scenes of the seventh art through the discovery of a director, an actor or a screenwriter. This 9th edition pays tribute to an artist familiar to the people of Cannes: Charlie Chaplin !

Designed by Yves Durandcurator of the exhibition and designer of the Chaplin’s World museum park, in partnership with the Bureau Chaplin, this exhibition highlights Charlie Chaplin’s first feature film and reveals his extraordinary journey, from poverty to world glory.

Released in February 1921, the famous silent comedy-drama “The Kid” tells the story of an abandoned child taken in by a poor glazier, Charlie Chaplin, and their adventures. More than 100 years after the release of the blockbuster film, this autobiographical gem continues to transcend generations, combining comedy and emotion.

Thus, the temporary exhibition begins by offering a immersion behind the scenes of the filmin 19th century London and the discovery of letters from Hannah, Chaplin’s mother, then interned in a psychiatric hospital, and his brother Sydney. These documents allow us to approach the story of the film at the heart of its genesis: Chaplin’s childhood itself. Visitors discover the life of little Charlie transported from one orphanage to another.

They will also be able to browse a space dedicated to the story of Jackie Coogan, interpreter of The Kidand understand the play of mirrors between the characters of the Tramp and the Kid, and between the lives of Chaplin and that of Coogan.

This journey into the world of the film is punctuated by magic lantern shows and a cinematic experience unique in the “Nickelodeon” space.

Finally, the exhibition collects testimonies from Michael Chaplin, son of Charlie Chaplin, to better understand who was the father behind this celebrity.

A projection du film « The Kid » Charlie Chaplin’s film concert with the Cannes National Orchestra will take place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, July 30 at 9 p.m..

On the sidelines of this event, Cannes Town Hall is presenting photos of musicians who paraded on the Cannes red carpet by photographer Gilles Traverso.
