Kingston occupies a dominant position in the SSD markets. Digital Solutions and Cybersecurity spoke on the subject with Laurent Sirgy, Regional Director for France, Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa at Kingston Technology.

Digital & Cybersecurity Solutions – How many products does Kingston deliver per day?

Laurent Sirgy – We are proud to announce that Kingston Technology is shipping nearly 2 million products per day! Since 2002, Kingston has shipped over 100 million memory modules that have the ability to be overclocked. In 2002, Kingston entered the B2C tech market with a high-performance memory line under the Kingston HyperX brand. Over the next 19 years, Kingston grew the HyperX brand into the gaming and tech enthusiast space until the peripheral brand was sold to HP in 2021.

Building on the overwhelming success of HyperX memory products, Kingston has rebranded its high-performance component lines as Kingston FURY, investing resources and knowledge from its core business to create a new generation of products for enthusiasts.

Today, Kingston’s technical expertise has led to product overclocking records and numerous awards. For Kingston, a new era of cutting-edge, high-performance solutions for enthusiasts and gamers continues.

Where does Kingston fit in?

TrendForce named Kingston Technology as the top third-party SSD vendor in 2022. According to figures provided by TrendForce, Kingston accounted for 28% of the 114 million units shipped in 2022.

Kingston has been ranked the world’s top third-party DRam module supplier, according to analyst firm TrendForce’s latest revenue ranking. The brand retains the top spot with an estimated 78.12% market share and $13.5 billion in revenue. TrendForce reports that DRAM module sales in 2022 were down 4.6% year-on-year across the industry. Kingston’s revenue, meanwhile, declined slightly, but the company maintained its global leadership position for the 20th consecutive year. Kingston Technology remains the top DRam module supplier in 2022.

What is the percentage split between the hard drive market and the SSD market?

While we don’t have an exact percentage, I can say that from a customer market perspective, we are seeing SSDs become the preferred storage solution. This is due to a number of factors. Speed: SSDs offer significant improvements in data transfer over HDDs. The fastest commercially available HDDs offer speeds of 160MB/s, while even an entry-level SSD will be more than 3x faster than many SATA drives with read and write speeds of over 500MB/s. NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) drives are the most powerful on the market. They can reach speeds of up to 7,000MB/s, which is ideal for transferring large files such as videos or large images.
Second factor: reliability. The absence of detachable parts allows SSDs to be much more resistant to vibration and shock than hard drives
External SSDs are also great for data storage on the go.
SSDs are more energy efficient than hard drives. In systems such as laptops, where operating power comes from a battery, hard drives deplete power more quickly than an SSD. This means that laptops that use SSDs can often run on battery power for longer than an equivalent system using a hard drive.
SSDs are also lighter than hard drives because the construction parts they require are very light. In fact, depending on the model, an external hard drive can weigh up to 680 grams. While external SSDs can weigh up to 29 g. For example, the Kingston XS2000 external SSD fits in a pocket and offers up to 4 TB of high-speed storage.

However, in the enterprise realm, there are still valid reasons for using HDDs over SSDs. This is because they offer a cheaper solution for cold storage.
