Victor Hedman: towards an extension at the Lightning?

According to reports from ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, the Lightning are close to finalizing a contract extension with their go-to defenseman, Victor Hedman.

This should solidify the backbone of the Lightning defense for the near future.

Victor Hedman has been an indispensable part of the Lightning since the start of his current eight-year, $63 million contract, which began in the 2017-18 season and is set to end after the 2024-25 campaign.

During his tenure, Victor Hedman appeared in 503 regular season games, amassing an impressive total of 91 goals and 427 points. His contributions were key to the Lightning’s consistent playoff appearances and multiple Stanley Cup victories.

Hedman’s accolades include a Norris Trophy, a Conn Smythe Trophy and two Stanley Cup rings, highlighting his elite status in the league.

The potential contract extension comes at a crucial time for Hedman and the Lightning.

Following the trade of defenseman Mikhail Sergachev, Hedman is expected to shoulder an even greater defensive load. While he handled the increased responsibilities last season admirably, the long-term sustainability of such a workload will be a critical factor to monitor.

Specific details of Hedman’s new contract are expected to be released soon, but a long-term commitment similar to the recent extension given to Steven Stamkos is expected.
