“It’s a disgrace”: in Marseille, residents react to the results of the first round of legislative elections

Near Place Castellane, Mercedes goes to the market this Monday morning. At 86, she cannot hide her anger. “I left Spain to escape Franco, and now it’s Bardella, a young joker who’s going to come to power?” Moved to tears, the retiree never forgot the words of the co-founder of the National Front, Jean-Marie Le Pen. “He declared that the gas chambers were a detail of history! I was there, I saw the juice of the burned people flowing at Birkenau.”.

A little further on, on Boulevard Baille, Samia took a modest lunch break before resuming her training. If she is not the same age as Mercedes, the observation remains the same. “I am ashamed, but above all I am afraid. They must understand that minorities are not the reason for France’s malaise.”sighs the young woman.

In Marseille, the New Popular Front came out on top by a wide margin, with almost 39% of the total vote, seven points more than in 2022. A score driven by the high turnout (62.74%) and carried by the performances of the rebels Manuel Bompard and Sébastien Delogu, re-elected in the first round. Their massive scores helped make the New Popular Front the leading force on a city-wide scale. But the RN, qualified in the other five constituencies, is hot on their heels.

Now, everyone has their eyes fixed on next Sunday and the second round. The president of the National Rally also proposed, a little earlier in the morning, a debate to the founder of La France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon. The latter said he agreed on the need for a debate between the two political parties, but ruled out his own participation, referring to the leaders of LFI.
