Very strong push by the RN in the 17th, the second round looks complicated for the NFP

If we expected big scores from the RN in the villages of Arleusis, we see that Frédéric Chéreau is even mistreated in his stronghold of Douai, where he is ahead of Thierry Tesson by 7 votes. The New Popular Front will have to count on a huge Republican front to win in the second round.

As elsewhere in the North, the RN came out on top in the 17th constituency (Douai-Arleux). Candidate Thierry Tesson, supported by the RN and the Ciottistes, as well as his substitute, the outgoing RN MP Thibaut François, collected 47.92% of the votes. The mayor of Douai, Frédéric Chéreau came 2th with 29.84% of the votes. As for Guillaume Honoré and his deputy Franz Quatreboeufs (Horizons/Modem), they will not be able to run for a second round (12.61%).

The RN makes +15% in the constituency

With a much higher turnout (63.25% compared to 42.37% in 2022) and a fairly solid left-wing union candidate such as Frédéric Chéreau, mayor of Douai, one could expect the cards to be reshuffled. In the end, the rise of the RN observed in 2022 (32.91%) is confirmed very strongly with a surge of + 15%. Thierry Tesson, for example, has more than 60% in Arleux or Brunémont. Even in his stronghold of Douai, Frédéric Chéreau is neck and neck with Thierry Tesson, who is ahead of him by 7 votes (38.13% for the RN and 38.08% for the NFP). In 2022, the NUPES candidate Cyril Grandin came out on top in the city of Douai.

“New RN voters mobilized”

« I knew that the participation was going to be better than in the Europeans but very smart who could know what this additional participation covered. It must be recognized that left-wing voters were more mobilized, but new RN voters were also mobilized. And so the balance of power is not that different from the Europeans », explains Frédéric Chéreau. Before 2017 and the En Marche wave, the 17e constituency was more traditionally known as a “left” land. Indeed, Marc Dolez, socialist and then founder of the Left Party with Jean-Luc Mélenchon was for a very long time the elected representative of the constituency. Thierry Tesson is obviously satisfied with this good result and indicates that it “augurs well for the 2026 municipal elections”.

Frédéric Chéreau calls for a republican front

Frédéric Chéreau calls the candidates who arrived in 3th and 4th position, Guillaume Honoré (Horizons / Modem) and Loïck Brouazin, LR canal historique, (7.97%) to vote for him in the second round. Obviously, Horizons has spoken out and is calling for a vote for the mayor of Douai. On the other hand, the LR Canal historique du Douaisis does not give voting instructions and leaves freedom of choice to voters. They consider that Thierry Tesson “ is a renegade mercenary, traitor to his political family of origin and Frédéric Chéreau a social democrat submissive to the rebels, rallied to the extreme left LFI whose excesses and outrages he does not condemn ».
